Buying Sunscreen? Read This First.

Warmer weather is here and for many people that means spending more time in the sun, especially at the pool or beach. And sunscreen is a must for your shopping list. How do you know which sunscreen is best for you? This year sunscreens have to meet new testing and labeling requirements issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These new labels include:

  • Indicating if the sunscreen is broad spectrum which offers protection against UVB and UVA rays.
  • Indicating if the sunscreen is water resistant and whether it provides protection for 40 or 80 minutes of swimming and sweating.
  • Not using the terms waterproof, sweatproof, or sunblock.

Want to get the best sunscreen for your money? Don’t assume that the more expensive sunscreens offer the best protection. Consumer Reports found in recent tests that the least effective sunscreens were among the most expensive.

The following articles provide more information about the new sunscreen labels and choosing the best sunscreen for you and your wallet.
